Welcome to Term 4
I would like to welcome all of our families and students back to Term 4. I hope you had a fantastic break and are ready for a great term. We're excited to guide you through more incredible learning and challenges inside and outside the classroom. This term, there are so many opportunities in academics, sports, performing arts and character development. We believe that every one of you has the potential to grow, develop and achieve great success.
To some of our families, this might still be the early days of your child's educational journey with us. To our Year 12 HSC students, you're nearing the end of an important chapter. We want to extend our best wishes to you as you sit your final exams. We've been keeping you in our thoughts and prayers every day and we'll continue to do so right up until your last exam. We're confident that all your hard work and dedication will pay off and you'll achieve the goals you've been striving for.
As for our Year 12 students who are part of the Class of 2024, your HSC studies have officially kicked off. While it might seem like a whole year is a long time, you'll find yourselves sitting for those final exams sooner than you think. Time flies and we want to encourage each and every one of you to make the most of every day of learning.
I pray that Term 4 will be a great term for all of our students and families. We look forward to seeing what all our students can and will achieve during this time.
Mr Trevor Norman
College Headmaster
Please be reminded of the upcoming November Staff Development Days (previously communicated earlier in the year through the calendar). Students do not attend the College on these days. The dates are listed below:
- Thursday, 16 November 2023
- Friday, 17 November 2023
The Little Elves Childcare will be running on these days for students in Years T-6 (limited spaces available). Please contact them directly on 0487 001 779 to book.
Changes To Students Driving to the College
Students in Years 11-12 currently complete a Permission to Drive to the College Form, prior to being allowed to drive and park on College grounds. As a result of ongoing review in this area and continued growth at the College, this process will be adjusted from Term 4 2023 to manage this growth.
Only students in Year 12 will be permitted to drive to the College. This notice provides plenty of time for the current Year 10 to be aware of this change, meaning that they can only submit a Permission to Drive to the College from Term 4 2024 when they are in Year 12, not Year 11.
Year 11 students are allocated roles as Transport Monitors, this will assist in ensuring that for the duration of Year 11, these students will remain on the buses, supporting younger students during travel to and from the College.
A reminder to Year 12 students who are in the process of gaining their licence, to please complete the appropriate processes prior to driving to the College and to park in the designated space they are provided in the Student Carpark or Bradfield areas.

Year 12 2024 Information Evening
The Year 12 2024 HSC Information Evening will be held on Monday, 16 October at 6.00 pm. This Information Evening will be held at the College in Deakin 2 and 3, due to the HSC exams occurring in Warne. This is an important evening for all Students and we encourage at least one parent/carer to attend.
I will be explaining the HSC Assessment Program and our internal policies and procedures. There will also be an opportunity to hear from a range of staff in areas related to HSC Special Provisions, Careers, understanding the ATAR, as well as managing wellbeing throughout Year 12. Students will also receive the 2023/2024 Assessment Booklet for their HSC courses as well as an Information Booklet produced by NESA around the HSC rules and procedures. We look forward to seeing students and parents at this event.
Year 12 2023 HSC Exams Have Started
Our Year 12 students of 2023 sat their first HSC exam on Wednesday, 11 October. All exams for the HSC will occur in the Warne Auditorium, so it is important that we are mindful of noise around this space as often many exams go until after the College day finishes.
We wish our students well in their exams and pray that they will be able to showcase all that they have learnt.
VET Hospitality Students Completing Work Placement
Several of our students in Year 11 went out during the holidays to complete 35 hours in industry as part of the VET Hospitality Work Placement requirements. Here the students were able to use some of the skills that they have learned in class and work in industry-type conditions. Many thanks to the employers that hosted our students: Camden Valley Inn and Vaby’s Restaurant in Picton.
Textiles Art Project Challenge
During Terms 1-3, a group of students stayed back on a Wednesday afternoon to work on a Textile Art project that would go into the Technology Educators' Association (TEA) competition.
The theme for this year's project was 'Country' and students were required to use this inspiration to create a textile art piece. The textile item required the students to use at least three different surface decoration techniques in their piece which could have included dyeing, printing, embroidery, applique, beading, free motion work, felting or any other way to embellish their piece. The textile art piece had a size limitation but could have been anything from a cushion to a sculpture, clothing or even a wall hanging.
Each school is only allowed to enter one student from each Stage Group.
From Stage 4 - Eva Golovenko was chosen to enter.
Eva made a cushion cover that reflects the diverse nature of Australia. Eva was inspired by the diverse nature of our flora and fauna.
Our country is made up of a variety of stunning flora and fauna and I have used free motion embroidery, hand embroidery, application of beads and sequins, and the addition of other materials to create my project. My project includes a Waratah, Flannel Flowers, a Witchetty grub, a blue wren, Banksia Flower and Australia Wattle in my design.
From Stage 5 - Jess Smiltnieks was chosen to enter
Jess made her own frame on the laser cutter and wove a piece that will be used as a wall hanging.
When I think of 'Country' I think about Australia, the land where I was born and have lived my whole life. There are two aspects to 'Country' - Culture and Land. The indigenous communities who have been here since the beginning, shaping traditions and the contrast of our landscapes: rolling green hills, to burnt red sand and bubbling rivers to calm coastal seas. My project represents Australian land and culture through the use of traditional indigenous symbols. The two circles represent campsites or gatherings and they are connected by the symbol of a river. The colours of the weaving display the diversity of the Australian landscapes and features dried leaves, and hand felted flannel flowers. I created my own loom on the laser cutter to get its unusual shape and have used a variety of yarns and textures in the weavings. I have also dyed some of the fibres and added beads to accentuate the flowers.

College Musical News
We were pleased to announce the College Musical for 2024 - Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of the Crown Jewel last term.
Secondary students auditioned last term for main roles. On Monday, 16 October we are commencing rehearsals with all students interested from Years 6-12 and those who have been successful in attaining a main role. Students interested should have already expressed their interest on Thursday, 12 October and a permission note would have gone home via the College App. If students are still interested, they can let Mr Grant know, so a permission note can go home accordingly.
At the beginning of Term 1, 2024, students in Years 5 and 6 will be invited to join the Primary Chorus.
Rehearsals for the cast (2023) in Years 6-12 will occur each Monday afternoon from 2.45 pm - 4.15 pm with students meeting outside Johnson 11 Studio. A variety of locations will be used for rehearsals whilst the HSC Examinations occur in the Warne Auditorium. We will eventually move rehearsals to the Auditorium at the completion of the HSC. Students can utilise the late bus service or be picked up by parents in the car park behind the Johnson/Elizabeth buildings.

Music Excursion
During the College holidays, Elective Music classes travelled to Sydney to witness a unique concert involving a classic Australian rock group and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House. Birds of Tokyo are an Australian alternative rock band from Perth, Western Australia. Their concerts truly set them apart with explosions of energy to spine-tingling moments of intimacy.
The students travelled in and spent some time enjoying some fine dining around the Circular Quay area before heading to the Opera House for the exciting concert.
It was a very immersive experience with the band members introducing their works as well as some background into their journey as a band. They also spoke about how it was a great collaboration between rock and the symphony and how the layers of the orchestra can enhance their sound as a band.
Many thanks to Mr Law and Ms Valente for accompanying the students to the concert, as well as Mr Edwards for driving the College bus into the city.

Health and Physical Education Day
Each year we acknowledge and engage in “Health and Physical Education Day” which is an initiative promoted by ACHPER (Australian Council of Health, Physical Education and Recreation). It helps reinforce messages about the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. This year we have a focus on how technology can promote and facilitate physical activity rather than draw us away from being active. The day has been moved to be a culmination of the Wellbeing Week on Friday, 20 October. Activities will be held for secondary students at recess and lunch on this day. Students are encouraged to participate and give the activities a go. All Secondary students can wear their Sports Uniform to College. Students who have PDHPE on this day will participate in a PE lesson for their scheduled period.

Kindergarten Excursion
On Friday, 22 September Kindergarten went on their first excursion to Calmsley Hill City Farm in Abbotsbury. College Chaplain - Reflective
The College Learner Disposition focus for Term 4 is Reflective. This is a habit that we are working on developing and cultivating in our students, their learning, their character and also in their faith.
I love holidays. They’re a chance to stop, unwind, rest and relax. I find that the slower routine in the holidays enables a chance to stop, pause and reflect. During these past holidays, I spent some time reading the book of Philippians. In Philippians 2:5 Paul encourages the reader, “in your relationships with one another have the same mindset as Christ Jesus". The question then is what is Jesus’ mindset towards relationships? Jesus, who in His very nature is God didn’t use this to His own advantage, instead, Jesus chose to humble Himself by becoming human. He did this because of His great love for humanity and His desire for humanity to be saved from the penalty of sin.
In doing so, Jesus demonstrates the mindset that He desires we have with one another .“In humility, value others above yourself, not looking to your own interests, instead to the interests of others" (Philippians 2:4). As I reflected on Jesus' willingness to value others above Himself, me and you, it struck me that this is not my natural tendency. My natural disposition is to think primarily about me, but that’s the beauty of the gospel. Jesus calls us to have a countercultural attitude, one that shifts us from the centre of the universe and instead puts Him where He rightly belongs. As we do this, we’re able, through His help to consider others more, caring for others better as a result. The invitation Jesus offers is to be part of a community that genuinely cares for one another. He sets the example; can I ask, how are you going to respond to Jesus' invitation?
Mr Matt Roberts
College Chaplain

Young carers are young people who help look after a family member or friend who lives with a disability, mental illness, medical condition or who is frail. Providing support can be very rewarding for young carers, however at times it can have a big impact on their education and wellbeing.
Our Carers NSW Young Carer Awareness Training is a free, one-hour session aimed at supporting professionals and educators to identify and help young carers.
The session will explore:
- Who young carers are and why identifying young carers is important
- Potential impacts (both positive and negative) of their caring role
- Practical support options available
Carers NSW can help you to continue to reflect the principles of the NSW Carers Charter in your work to ensure that young carers across NSW are achieving their highest potential.

Community Links Wellbeing (CLW) will be running the following Parenting Education courses commencing 2023:
- Managing Challenging Behaviours Collaboratively- 18 October to 6 December - An eight-part session of 2 hours each week at Tahmoor Community Centre.
A very popular and in high-demand course for parents of children exhibiting challenging Behaviours which can often co-exist with a diagnosis that impacts emotional regulation eg. ASD, ADHD, ODD, intellectual concerns etc. This is the course for parents if other popular parenting courses & strategies have not worked.
- Tuning in to Teens - 26 October to 30 November at Tahmoor Community Centre in partnership with CLW and Health SWSLD- Family Connect and Support: a six-session, evidence-based program for parents/carers who have young people aged 10 to 17 years old. The course teaches skills in emotion coaching and raises awareness of the developmental needs of their young person so parents can better respond to their teens emotions and needs which improves their connection with their teen.
When parents and carers respond to teens’ emotions in ways that validate and accept emotions but still guide them with appropriate behaviour, young people learn important skills in emotional intelligence. Over time young people use these skills in all aspects of their lives.
