Message from the Headmaster
As we stand at the midway point of Term 3, I find myself contemplating the swiftness with which this term is progressing – already concluding Week 5. This, in turn, prompts reflection on the year's passage as a whole. Can you believe it? There are only 122 days left until Christmas! These musings naturally lead me to ponder the fleeting nature of time. Indeed, time is an invaluable treasure. While everyone receives the same 24 hours daily, it's an asset that can't be saved for later; we can only invest it judiciously in the present.
At times, I find myself immersed in what could be called 'busy' work. Yet, on introspection, I realise that such endeavours pale in significance when compared to moments spent with family, heartfelt conversations with colleagues, or spending time with God himself, who always waits patiently for us to speak with him.
Psalm 139:1-4 encapsulates this beautifully. "O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thoughts afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether."
Taking time for what truly matters, cherishing those around us, and affording ourselves the space to reflect upon our many blessings often ushers in a sense of peace. Amid the frenzy of our rapid-paced lives, it becomes paramount to instil in our children the value of slowing down and being thankful for both our material blessings and relationships.
With this perspective in mind, I offer some guiding principles for us as parents to inspire our children – and perhaps even remind ourselves – about making the most of our time:
Family Dinners: Let's make a commitment to dine together as a family. Phones aside, let's engage in genuine conversation, sharing our days and embracing gratitude.
Presence in the Moment: Practise being fully present. Engage your children, inquire about their days, and demonstrate a genuine interest in their responses.
Open Dialogue: Share with your kids your own experiences of "wasted time" and discuss how that time could have been better invested.
Mindfulness: Explore mindfulness together. Embrace the practise of slowing down, reflecting on achievements, and cultivating gratitude.
As we hurtle towards the Christmas season, let's embark on the second half of Term 3 with renewed intention. Let's endeavour to cherish every moment and guide our young ones in cultivating a mindful appreciation for the passage of time. Doing so will undoubtedly create lasting memories, stronger bonds and a more enriched life.
Wishing you all a fulfilling journey towards the year's end.
Mr Trevor Norman

Term 3 Learner Disposition - Relational
Imitation
Imitation involves picking up others' habits and values. This is an important component of the Term 3 focus on the Relational Disposition. Imitation or modelling is an important part of learning and a feature of explicit instruction.
So why is imitation important?
Modelling Behavior: Imitation allows learners to see how others approach tasks, solve problems, and acquire knowledge or skills. By observing someone else's methods and strategies, individuals can gain insights into effective learning techniques they may not have considered on their own.
Reducing Cognitive Load: When learners imitate a model's behaviour or approach, it can help reduce cognitive load. Instead of trying to invent a new approach or strategy from scratch, they can follow a proven path, saving mental energy and cognitive resources for deeper understanding and application of the learned material.
Building Confidence: Imitation can boost learners' confidence. When they see others successfully using certain strategies or techniques, they are more likely to believe that they can do the same. This can be particularly important for students who may lack confidence in their own learning abilities.

Year 11 Exam timetable
Students in Year 11 have received their Examination Timetable and a copy of the exam schedule has also been uploaded to the students' CANVAS assembly page. It is an expectation that if students do not have an exam, they remain at the College in the Flynn Library. Students are reminded about the need to wear full College Uniform and be aware of any partial or full absences either on the day of the exam or the day before the exam require an Illness and Misadventure Form and appropriate documentation to be submitted to me. The Year 11 Exam week is in Week 8.
Year 11 Work Placement
Students in Year 11 Hospitality, as part of their coursework, go into the industry to further develop and refine their skills. This week, several Hospitality students were hosted by a range of employers including Dahlia's Cafe, Royal Hotel Camden, Wildflower Society Cafe, Menangle Country Club, RSL Life Care-Queen Victoria Park, Vaby's Restaurant and The ARTHouse. We thank these businesses for hosting our students!
Our students enjoyed their week and were able to implement aspects of their learning into real-life scenarios and workplaces.

Year 8 continue their study of Pop Music from a variety of social, cultural and historical contexts and are developing their musicianship through the performance of both traditional and modern Pop songs.
In Stage 5, students are busily developing their performance techniques and preparing for next term's MADDD Night. Each class has chosen a piece that is challenging and builds their capacity as musicians. MISA Youth of the Year Competition – Year 9
On Thursday, 17 August, Dali Martin and William Norman from Year 9 represented the College in the MISA Youth of the Year Competition at Thomas Hassell Anglican College. The competition focused on the student’s awareness and understanding of current affairs. Dali and William competed against 16 students from 10 other schools. The students had to prepare and deliver a three-minute speech on a topic of their own choosing which was of relevance to today’s world. Dali and William were also interviewed before a three-person panel made up of members from the Campbelltown Toastmasters Club. The purpose of the interview part of the competition is to gauge the degree to which each student is socially aware. Both students articulated their ideas clearly and covered important topics with the appropriate amount of maturity and compassion.
Special Congratulations to Dali Martin who placed 2nd overall in the competition.

T-2 Book Week Parade
Thank you to Parents, T-2 Teachers, Library staff, Admin Staff, Property Staff, Year 10 Dance and Drama staff and students and Little Elf for contributing to our 2023 Book Week Parade!
What could be better than dedicating an afternoon to celebrating the joy of reading children’s books with our youngest students? The early years are so important for fostering a love of reading and it is never too early to start. From six months old, babies who have already been read to regularly will begin to identify a book as being ‘time for a story’. Babies may develop a liking for a particular book and ask it to be read again and again. (Raising Readers, Megan Daley)
Ask your child what books they have in their Library bag each week, find out why they chose that book and enjoy reading it with them. I would love to hear about your reading adventures at home. They may even inspire other families to read together more regularly!

Year 7 & Transition 2025 Sibling Applications
Applications have already begun to be reviewed for places for Year 7 2025. If your child is in this cohort, please send in their application ASAP to avoid disappointment. If your child is already enrolled at the College, they do not need to apply.
We are also continuing to experience high demand for our Transition program and this demand is exponentially increasing! We strongly encourage all siblings who are in the cohort for Transition 2025 to submit their applications now to avoid disappointment.
Our Kindergarten entry year is trending to have less and less available places due to the numbers in Transition, so we do encourage you to apply for Transition if suitable for your child. Places are limited and siblings are not guaranteed spots.

As a general note, applications continue to pour in for 2024 and beyond, across all Year Groups, but especially our entry years of Transition, Kindergarten, Year 5, Year 7 and Year 11.
All current College families looking to enrol siblings for the coming years are encouraged to do so without delay to avoid disappointment. Just a reminder again, if your child is already enrolled at the College, they do not need to apply.

Carers NSW Young Carer Program
Young carers are young people who help look after a family member or friend who lives with a disability, mental illness, medical condition or who is frail. Providing support can be very rewarding for young carers, however at times it can have a big impact on their education and wellbeing.
Our Carers NSW Young Carer Awareness Training is a free, one-hour session aimed at supporting professionals and educators to identify and help young carers.
The session will explore:
- Who young carers are and why identifying young carers is important
- Potential impacts (both positive and negative) of their caring role
- Practical support options available
Carers NSW can help you to continue to reflect the principles of the NSW Carers Charter in your work to ensure that young carers across NSW are achieving their highest potential.
If you would like to organise Young Carer Awareness Training, please email the Carers NSW Young Carer team at yc@carersnsw.org.au or you are welcome to call me on 02 9280 4744.

Community Links Wellbeing (CLW) will be running the following Parenting Education courses commencing 2023:
- Managing Challenging Behaviours Collaboratively- October 18 to December 6 - An eight-part session of 2 hours each week at Tahmoor Community Centre.
A very popular and in high-demand course for parents of children exhibiting challenging Behaviours which can often co-exist with a diagnosis that impacts emotional regulation eg. ASD, ADHD, ODD, intellectual concerns etc. This is the course for parents if other popular parenting courses & strategies have not worked.
- Tuning in to Teens – October 26 to November 30 at Tahmoor Community Centre in partnership with CLW and Health SWSLD- Family Connect and Support: a six-session, evidence-based program for parents/carers who have young people aged 10 to 17 years old. The course teaches skills in emotion coaching and raises awareness of the developmental needs of their young person so parents can better respond to their teen’s emotions and needs which improves their connection with their teen.
When parents and carers respond to teens’ emotions in ways that validate and accept emotions but still guide them with appropriate behaviour, young people learn important skills in emotional intelligence. Over time young people use these skills in all aspects of their lives. Emotional intelligence helps teen’s to be more resilient so that when they face challenging experiences they can talk about their feelings and work through these experiences.
- 1-2-3 Magic and Emotion Coaching: Coming Term 4, dates to be confirmed. Taking expressions of interest now. A three-session program of 2.5 hours for parents of children aged 2-12 years old with an extra booster session for support ( four sessions in total). The 1-2-3 Magic and Emotion Coaching program aims to help parents and carers manage difficult child behaviour with a focus on strategies and techniques that promote positive behaviour; encouragement in developing the child's ability to manage their emotional reactions; and relationship-building.
Priority placement is given to parents in the Wollondilly, Wingecarribee and Camden LGA’s. Parents outside these areas may still be able to attend, please contact the email below to discuss further.
