Message from the Headmaster
Prayer for our Neighbours
I encourage us all to pray and mourn with the Macarthur Anglican School community as they grieve the loss of one of their students this week in a terrible accident. We lift them up in our prayers, and we are offering support in any way we can.
This week at the College
We are thankful for our Year 7 students, who are enjoying a great camp together. I was able to watch students working on challenges while growing and learning together. It is a great experience for them as they build quality relationships that will last for the next six years, and likely, many years to come.
Last night, our high-achieving students from Year 12, 2022 were recognised and presented to the Mayor in honour of their achievements. It was a privilege and a proud moment to hear "Wollondilly Anglican College" read out so often. Well done to those students who worked so hard and achieved such great results. Thank you to their parents who supported them through many nights of study and stress.
During busy, stressful or difficult times of the year, it is important to take a moment to reflect on what we have. We are so privileged to be part of this community and this College. I am so thankful that I have a relationship with God, the source of all peace. When I am feeling overwhelmed or anxious, I know that my God has my life under his control. I have learned, and I am continuing to learn, that when I hand over my concerns and burdens to Him, he allows me to rest in the peace that only he can give. Jesus said, in Matthew's Gospel;
“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:29-30

Learning Disposition Focus - Resilience
Term 1 - Learning Disposition Focus - Resilience
An aspect of Resilience that teachers have been investigating this week is a focus on developing perseverance in learning. Perseverance is persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.
Teachers were challenged about their classroom culture for developing perseverance as well as affirmed regarding areas of their practice where they are focusing on developing perseverance in students. The final outcome of this was teachers looking for an area of growth and some new strategies that they would like to try.
Developing a perseverance-friendly culture needs teachers to believe that:
Real learning comes from making mistakes and overcoming being stuck
Being stuck is an interesting, not shameful, place to be
Mistakes are learning opportunities
Real learning requires effort, and good teaching is about putting the learning in the extended grasp of the learner
Through such a persevering culture students come to believe that:
Effort is part and parcel of the learning process, and I’m discovering how to do this
Having to try doesn’t mean I can’t be good at it
I can learn more from making mistakes
The use of a number of strategies may be required in order to move forward from periods of being stuck
Easy work doesn’t help me really learn
Students will be surveyed throughout this term regarding where they are at currently in terms of resilience in their learning. This will involve looking at different aspects that make up resilience which includes perseverance. This data will be helpful in determining areas for development and support strategies to assist students to preserve.
The survey question specific to this area is - Perseverance - I stick with my learning even when things are hard
The outcomes of this will be helpful both in learning and in life. The development of perseverance is greatly enhanced when parents and teachers are modelling it. It would be great to consider if this is something that you are modelling to your child and continue to investigate ways that you can support this to become an embedded disposition in your child's learning.

Secondary Teaching & Learning
Teaching and Learning (7-12)
Assessment is an important part of the teaching and learning process. As educators, teachers collect pieces of both informal and formal assessment items to measure a student’s performance or achievement in a subject area. Informal assessment may include class work and bookwork, an impromptu test or speech, verbal discussions with students to ascertain their level of understanding or perhaps even observation.
Formal assessment items are specifically known to the student (as in they are pre-warned) and take a measure of what and how well as student has learnt something. Formal assessment items help to determine a student’s proficiency or mastery of a topic, or skill. They will include pieces such as hand-in essays, tests and examinations, research assignments, written speeches, practical and portfolio work, and even performances in perhaps say a music lesson.
All students in the College have been issued with their Assessment Information Booklet (7-12). In this document, is important information on areas such as what to do in the event of an absence when a formal task is due, how achievement grades (7-11) are determined and information associated with plagiarism, late submissions of tasks, and the process involved with requesting an extension on an item.
Please take the time to review this document with your child so everyone is familiar with the process. Attached to our assessment policy are also the assessment grids, which have all the due dates for all the subjects for a set Year Group. It is important that these dates are then written into student Diaries and calendars so they know what is coming up and can implement effective time management skills to ensure these tasks are done to the best of the student’s ability. Tasks dates also appear on edumate so there is no confusion about what is due when!
Year 12 2023
Just a reminder that we have made the Year 12 Parent Teacher Interviews earlier this year to allow for a detailed discussion of your child’s progress in each of their subjects. It is timely as they head towards their Year 12 Half-Yearly Examinations, that students are using teacher feedback and considering their performance to work towards their academic best. Interviews will occur on Tuesday, 28 February and Thursday, 2 March. Students are encouraged to attend these interviews and ask questions. Mr Baulch has sent information to parents on how to book these interviews. It would be great to see full attendance at these interviews, as there are always small and little changes students can make in their learning to improve their academic performance.
Year 11 2023
The Year has started well for our Year 11 students. It is important as they head into Stage 6 (Years 11 & 12) that they are aware of some of the requirements that differ from Stage 5 (Years 9 &10) and Stage 4 (Years 7 & 8). Even if you have had a child go through the College in a previous year, it is always good to hear a reminder of some of the important changes that occur at the Stage 6 level. Just a reminder that the Stage 6 Information Evening will occur on Tuesday, 7 March at 7.00 pm, and we would love for parents/carers to attend with their children. Students are reminded that the College Uniform is to be worn at this evening.
Year 10 Minimum Standards testing
During Week 7 of this term, students in Year 10 will complete the NESA Minimum Standards Testing at the College. Parents/carers should have received a letter regarding this. Please refer to the letter or contact me if you require more information.
Singapore Cultural Exchange
The College is excited to be taking a group of students to Singapore at the end of Term 2 as part of our Cultural Immersion Program we have established with Singapore Anglican High School. The students who are attending are those that have already started their preparation for this trip by attending Performing Arts Rehearsals via the schedule that Mr Grant put together. Please refer to this schedule for when the Music, Dance and Zoom elements need to be attended. We are also excited to have Miss Valente and Mrs Lloyd join us on the trip.

NAPLAN
NAPLAN Wednesday, 15 March to Monday, 27 March
NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills of all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, in schools across Australia. NAPLAN results will help you understand how your child is progressing throughout their education. The tests will be occurring between Wednesday, 15 March to Monday, 27 March.
Wollondilly Anglican College carries out NAPLAN testing through NAPLAN Online and students will complete the tests online except for Year 3 Writing. A more detailed timetable will be sent out closer to the time. Students who are absent from a testing session will do a catch-up test session. It is better that absences be avoided, other than illness, during the test period.
To help familiarise students with the test and ensure the actual tests run smoothly, students participated in a practice session prior to the testing period.
Some students are entitled to special provisions, such as rest breaks or extra time, and letters will be sent to the parents of those students.
Should you have any concerns regarding NAPLAN and your child, please contact the class teacher or Year Patron. We take the approach of helping students feel relaxed about these tests, at the same time understanding that it is helpful if they do the best they can.
The following link provides information about NAPLAN and has some demonstration tests.

Transition (Pre-K) News
A warm welcome to our Transition students and families. We are enjoying getting to know our students and we are so proud of the way they are settling into the classroom environment. We have begun our Phonics and Mathematics Programs which have been very exciting. In Phonics, we are learning that when we talk we use words and that rhyming words sound the same at the end. In Mathematics we have begun looking at the numbers 0, 1 and 2.
Library
We have Library with Mrs Reid, which the students are really enjoying. On returning from the Library after our first visit, one of the children ran to me saying, “Mrs Belusic we can take a book to our home!” The joy in their eyes was so precious. Students are enjoying borrowing books each week for you to read at home.
Please remember to put your child’s Library bag in their College Bag on their Library day.

Eating
Thank you for your support in packing yummy, healthy lunchboxes. Some of our duty teachers have found it difficult to encourage students to eat their sandwiches at lunchtime, this is normal as the children settle into a new environment and routine. Please let us know if you are concerned about the amount your child is eating. A reminder to make sure all containers are labelled not just the lunch bag.
Pick up
Just a reminder that when you pick your children up from Transition in the afternoon, please ensure your child stays with you and is not running around or climbing on the wall. There is a lot of movement with students going to buses and they can easily be knocked over. We are also very close to the road so it is a safety issue.
Thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

German News
Auf Deutsch bitte!
Another year has started and Year 7 have realised that not everyone speaks English after all. German is a good language to begin with as English is in fact a Germanic language and it means that English speakers find it more accessible. If you aren't convinced think Bier, Kindergarten, September, Oktober and November! These are in fact all German words.
Research shows that learning a second language has positive benefits for your native language acquisition, as it forces you to think about spelling, grammar and vocabulary.
Please encourage your child to use the Education Perfect software as a way to consolidate what the students have learned in class. Another app that is free and many parents and students like to use is Duolingo.
Year 7 students have started learning introductory phrases, Year 8 students have been learning how to describe items of clothing, Year 9 students have been exploring the northern part of Germany and have made some suggestions about what places should be included in the next German trip. Year 10 students have been working on very large numbers, perhaps in readiness for a spending spree in Germany.
Please remember "Monolingualism is curable! Learn a second language."

Resilience in Visual Arts
We have been very excited to welcome our Visual Arts students to the College, new and old, for another wonderful year of art in 2023! We have dived straight into learning, with our students studying everything from street art to insects as inspiration for their art. This term, across Years 7-12 Visual Arts classes, we are focusing on developing the learning disposition of resilience. As students approach their studies in Art Criticism and Art History, as well as Artmaking, we are encouraging them to work on developing a growth mindset by being resilient in the face of learning obstacles. Students are reminded that a successful learner in Visual Arts will make mistakes, but won't give up. They will try different ways of doing things, they will take risks with their work and practise their skills. These are the necessary steps towards mastery in our subject, and being resilient through challenging learning situations is key to building one's skills and improving! We look forward to seeing our students growing, achieving, imagining and creating in Visual Arts this year!

Most importantly, we encourage all to meet with God directly and personally through daily reading of The Bible and prayer. This is the best way to get to know who God is and further trust in him during this time. If you don’t have a Bible or don't know where to start, we encourage you to download “You Version” on your device, this is a great resource to assist you in your journey and relationship with God.

WAC Kids Care
From time to time, families undergo trauma such as severe or terminal illness. There are short-term support structures in place at the College to assist families during these times.
We have a collection of beautifully prepared meals that are ready for distribution to any families in need.
The WAC Kids Care Program offers support to families in the way of meals. Please contact Mrs Hay or Mrs Evans at the College. Confidentiality will be respected. If you know of anyone who may need meals at this time, please contact the College office.
