Message from the Headmaster
My mum used to say to me "mediocre is not good enough". As a young person I thought the definition of mediocre must have been "terrible, failing, hopeless", but when I looked up the definition years later I discovered that it wasn't as bad as that. Mediocre is "of moderate or low quality, value, ability or performance. Synonym: ORDINARY". I thought to myself "perhaps mediocrity is not that bad, what's wrong with average, middle-of-the-pack?" But as I reflect on the expectations that my mum had for me, I realise that she wanted me to aspire to be more than average. Being average is not necessarily a bad idea. Statistically, 'average' represents about 68% of the population with only 16% of people considered to be 'above-average'. But I have a couple of concerns about this, and I hope that you will read these both as encouragement that we can challenge our children with.
Firstly, the 'average' in many aspects of life seems to be declining; work ethic, respect for parents and authority, willingness to serve others, communication skills, general fitness etc. There are many, many categories where I see young people in particular lowering the standard of what is acceptable or average and I don't believe that our society and community are necessarily better for it. This leads to a real danger of comparison, when we look around and compare ourselves to 'the average' we don't feel so bad and we don't strive harder and we don't achieve what we are capable of.
My second point here is that with only a moderate amount of effort, we all have the opportunity to start moving beyond mediocrity. All of us can work a little bit harder, can be a little less selfish, can be more intentional about communicating better and maybe even be just a little bit healthier. The exciting part of this is that most people will not do this, therefore, even a moderate effort can push us further ahead than others. As our children apply themselves to their studies, as they develop self-discipline and higher levels of accountability, they will be giving themselves greater opportunities in the future that other people will not have access to. I am thankful that my mum challenged me to keep getting better at life, and I hope that we can continue to challenge our students to keep getting better.
"No student ever attains very eminent success by simply doing what is required of him: it is the amount and excellence of what is over and above the required, that determines the greatness of ultimate distinction." Charles Kendall Adams

Deputy Headmaster's Report
Supporting Student Reception
The Student Reception team do an amazing job throughout the day and at times can be short-staffed. We have noticed an increase in calls for requests to remind students of their travel arrangements, and in some cases asking for students to have a choice of whether they will catch the bus.
We encourage travel arrangements, where possible, to be arranged prior to the College day and if necessary, for these arrangements to be noted in the College Diary as a reminder for the students to follow. The Student Reception team are often dealing with first aid and medical needs and they do not always have the ability to pop down to classrooms to remind students of messages that they already know.
As we endeavour to deliver messages that are called through when plans change suddenly, please be mindful that messages received after 1.30 pm can be somewhat difficult to get to students as they aren't often always in their classrooms and/or can be offsite for sport on their sport days (Tuesday for Secondary and Wednesday for Primary). Please also remember that students should not have their phones on during the College day and therefore parents shouldn’t be trying to make contact through this means.
RAHT Kits - Available at Student Reception
The College still has a large number of RAHT Kits. If you have used your allocation, there is an opportunity to restock by dropping into Student Reception at any time between 7.30 am - 4.00 pm. Symptomatic testing is a very important method of early detection of COVID-19 and plays a critical part in limiting community spread.
Media and Photography Consent
We have recently reviewed our media consent processes at the College and are now requesting that parents provide their consent through the College App. The specific details of this are on the form which will be communicated to all parents in the coming days. If you have any questions about this, I would encourage you to contact Mr Alex Hitchins our Development Manager a.hitchins@wac.nsw.edu.au
All students must have their forms completed by Saturday, 27 August

Deputy Headmaster
Term 3 College Working Bee
On Saturday, 3 September from 8.00 am - 1.00 pm, the College will host the Term 3 Working Bee. This is a great opportunity for students and parents to attend and work with College staff and have the College looking great for the Country Fair the following week. We will finish the day at 12.00 pm with lunch provided by the P&F, so come along with your tools and a smile with the intention of enjoying yourselves on the day.
Mr Warland our Property Manager and the Property Team are keen to work with you all in a range of areas in preparation for the following weekend. All parents and students who can spare a little bit of time are encouraged to come along and contribute. It is a great opportunity to get alongside one another and build some community spirit whilst also getting some work done.
Mr Roberts our Community and Pastoral Support Aide will be running a Prayer Breakfast from 8.30 am. All are welcome at this event. There will be a focus on prayer for the College, our Community and our World. Bacon and Egg Rolls are available but you will need to RSVP to m.roberts@wac.nsw.edu.au for catering purposes by Wednesday, 31 August 2022.
All students that attend will be issued a Community Service Merit.
Mr Liam Toland
Director of Pastoral Care T-12
Term 3 Family Chapel
On Thursday, 8 September commencing at 6.00 pm the College will host the Term 3 Family Chapel. This event will involve students in Stage 2 (Years 3-4) who will be performing as well as having a focus on students in Years 9-12. The College invites students in these Year Groups to attend this evening. This is a fantastic opportunity to come together in community to hear God's word. The venue for Family Chapel will be the Shoulder to Shoulder Shelter. Students are asked to arrive from 5.30 pm.
Students attending should have their names marked off by their Class Teachers (Years 3-4) and Roll Call Teachers (Years 9-12). Students in Stage 2 (Years 3-4) are to sit with their Class Teachers, students in Years 9-12 are asked to sit with their parents. All students attending will receive a Community Service Merit.
House Captains from Year 11 will be on hand to collect gold coin donations and non-perishable food items. This will support the WAC Kids Care program, in providing meals for families in need within the community. The donations will also contribute to the points in the Overall House Shield.
Looking forward to seeing you for the Term 3 Family Chapel.
Mr Liam Toland
Director of Pastoral Care T-12

IPSSO vs OPAC
Nearing the end of the Winter season, the WAC IPSSO teams proved their staying power and commitment to squeeze every last point from the competition to secure commanding positions on the ladder.
In two very testing matches, the Junior and Senior Boys’ Soccer teams both played to one all draws against Oran Park Anglican College. This places the Junior boys precariously near the top of the table. The Senior boys were eager to continue their late season good form as they march toward the season’s end.
Mrs Maher was very relieved her Senior Netball Girls were able to bring home the goods with a 14-11 win over rivals OPAC. Laura Madgwick and Kayshah Daher performed well as late call-ups. Unfortunately, the Junior girls went down 10-0.
The AFL teams continue their monopoly on 1st place. The Juniors winning 13-4 and the Seniors victorious at 47-16.
The results for Newcombe Ball/Volleyball were mixed. The Juniors snagged a rare win while the WAC Volleyballers went down to OPAC.
Next week’s game is against St Greg’s on the St Greg’s Junior Campus.
NASSA Cricket Gala Day - 8 September - Jackson Park, Woodbine
Boys who were selected for the IPSSO Cricket Team at the beginning of the year will be representing WAC at the Primary NASSA Cricket Gala Day on Thursday, 8 September at Jackson Park, Woodbine. It is suggested that players bring their own gear. Mr Stark will be coaching the boys for the day. A bus will be provided to transport participating students. The bus will be departing the College at 7.30 am on the morning of the Gala Day.
Term 4 College Sports Swimming at the WLC for Stage 3
For the first 6 weeks of Term 4, Stage 3 students (who are not involved in an IPSSO team) will have the opportunity to participate in swimming activities at the Wollondilly Leisure Centre. This will be open to the first 60 students who return a completed permission note. Stay tuned for more information as the term progresses.

Musical Update
Our upcoming College Music ‘Shrek’ preparations continue next Monday.
Rehearsals continue each Monday and conclude at 4.15 pm for both Secondary and Primary students. Primary students will continue to meet Mrs Barker and Miss McMaster at Elizabeth 5 after the normal College Day. Secondary cast members will now proceed to the Warne Auditorium for their rehearsals, as the Trial HSC Examinations have now concluded.
As we will now conclude our rehearsals together in the Warne Auditorium, students who are being picked up can now be collected from the Warne Auditorium car park. Students will also be supervised if they are utilising the late bus service.
Set Design for the Musical also continues on Monday with Mrs Ware in Melba 2, from 2.45 pm - 4.15 pm. Pick-up arrangements are the same for these students.
Students who have expressed an interest in being part of the WAC Crew for the Musical have been spoken to by Mr Grant. These students will commence preparations with Mr Law on Monday next week starting at 2.45 pm and finishing at 4.15 pm. Pick arrangements are the same for these students.
Cheer Eisteddfod
The College Cheer group participated in their very first competition on Wednesday this week at the Camden Civic Centre. The students competed in an Open Entertainment section against groups with Secondary School students, most groups several years older than our Primary and Years 7-10 students. Against the odds, the girls placed 2nd by half a point!
It was a day full of nervous and excited energy where the cheerleaders came off the stage asking when they could perform again because it was so much fun!
I want to thank Ms Valente for her hard work and commitment to providing our students with a safe but enjoyable experience in Cheer. I also want to thank Mrs Rockwell for attending the event alongside Ms Valente and for her support of the girls.
Congratulations to all students involved on the day and for such fantastic results
Country Fair - Performance Schedule
At the upcoming WAC Country Fair, many of our Performing Arts groups and ensembles will be performing on the Main Stage under the Shoulder to Shoulder Shelter. We have prepared a schedule of performances that will hopefully ensure any of our students who perform in a number of groups/ensembles can participate smoothly throughout the duration of the day.
There are also some opportunities for some soloists during the day. Mr Grant and Mrs Barker may have already spoken directly to these students about this, but if your child is interested in presenting a Music, Dance or Drama solo item, please get in touch with Mr Grant (7-12) or Mrs Barker (K-6).

WAC Talent Quest
This year, the WAC Talent Quest is going to feature a combination of live and recorded auditions and performances, something we have seen over the last few years during Off-Campus Learning or affected by COVID restrictions.
These formats have meant that we have been able to feature some amazing talents that our students have, which are not possible in just a Live format on stage.
Information on how students in Years 5-11 can apply for an audition or submit a video recording will be made available via the Student Resources Canvas page or Seasaw in the coming days as well as in the Daily Broadcasts.

Year 5 Camp
Last week, Year 5 travelled to Teen Ranch at Cobbitty for a three-day camp. We took part in a variety of different activities, including Horse Riding, Orienteering and a Challenge Course which tested our communication and teamwork skills. We also tackled the Rock Climbing Wall and Abseiling with many of us overcoming our fears and making it to the top.
One of the group's favourite activities was the Giant Swing! We were pulled up to our chosen height by our friends and when we were ready to swing we pulled the rope. After a moment of freefall, we swung from side to side at an exhilarating speed. Even the teachers took on the challenge.
With this being the first College Camp for our students, it provided an opportunity to take on lots of challenges.
The Year 5 group were encouraged to:
- Develop a plan for success and focus on one thing at a time. Small steps lead to a big change.
- Find new strategies to help them cope. Making mistakes is a part of learning. Encouraging students to stop, refocus and reset helped them to identify what might have gone wrong and take the time to prepare to try again.
- Remember where they started and where they wanted to get to. The students were reminded that they will get there! While there will always be obstacles and the path might not be the one they initially planned, they will learn plenty about themselves along the way.
Year 5 all stood up to the challenge and we are quite proud of how they cared for each other and represented themselves and the College. The Teen Ranch leaders really appreciated how respectful the students were, as well as their positive attitude and enthusiasm while we were visiting. It was a real joy taking Year 5 away on camp.

Year 10 PDHPE Respectful Relationships Seminar
On Monday, 22 August, Year 10 engaged in a “Respectful Relationships” seminar, conducted by Your Choicez - Presented by David and Katie Kobler. Students explored the qualities of healthy relationships, pressures girls and boys are under in relationships, the influence of pornography on self and relationships, sexual consent, sexual harassment and healthy and safe sexual decisions. The presenters used up-to-date research and factual information to dismiss misconceptions and highlight the challenges facing young people. They also gave a range of strategies to adopt healthy and safe relationships. Students had the opportunity to discuss issues presented in small groups. The seminar proved effective in reinforcing concepts addressed in the Years 7-10 PDHPE program.

Mandatory Technology - Digital
Mandatory Technology – Digital have been working on creating Stop Motion Videos this term. This has involved them coming up with a variety of ideas with their group, storyboarding their ideas, learning about stop motion techniques and producing a video advertising a product or idea. Students have been creative and have come up with some great ideas.

Linguafest Video Competition
Each year the MLTA (Modern Language Teachers Association) runs a competition for students of Languages in NSW to write, perform and record a short video in the language they are learning. We have an enthusiastic and talented team of students from Year 7 and Year 8 preparing a video in German for submission.
I am so impressed with the way in which the students have developed a concept that interpreted this year’s theme of generosity and incorporated the signature item of a musical instrument.
We will be recording our video at the College on Tuesday, 30 August and are excited about the creativity we can incorporate using a greenscreen. Our team of buskers will be magically transported to the Berlin Hauptbahnhof for our story to unfold.
We will keep you updated, and will be able to share the video with you in due course!
