Message from the Headmaster
Family Chapel
I am very much looking forward to the Junior Family Chapel next Thursday, 9 June and to be able to welcome parents back on site. Family Chapel Services are held once a term in Terms 1, 2 and 3.
We have received an overwhelming response from people wishing to attend next week's Service, so we have had to adjust the focus of the Service to Years K-2 so we can fit into the Auditorium (as we feel it would be too cold to have under the Shelter). This means that only students in Years K-2 will now be performing and we anticipate the Auditorium will still be full. Our students in Years 3 and Year 4 will now be invited to perform at the Term 3 Family Chapel which will be held under the Shelter. (Please see the full article for clarification down further in the newsletter). Those attending are still invited to have a hot dog and drink from 5.00 pm at the Deakin Function Centre which is being supplied and served by the P&F.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these changes, however, we are really excited to be able to host community events at the College again.
Mr Trevor Norman
College Headmaster
Deputy Headmaster's Report
Marks v Grades
One of the anomalies between Formal Reports for Year 12 students and those for students in Years 7-11 are student performance ranks. In Years 7-11, students receive grades, whilst Year 12 students receive marks and ranks.
While reading the Year 12 Student Reports recently, I was reminded of how important it is for students, parents and teachers alike to focus on achievement and growth rather than ranks. Ranks are just a function of performance relative to a population. There will always be a student ranked 1st and a student ranked last, regardless of the level of achievement.
My recommendation to students and parents reading Year 12 Student Reports is to ignore or cover the rank and focus on achievement levels, learning attributes and the teacher comment. In many cases, students who ranked lower (in their course cohort) demonstrated high levels of achievement, consistently exhibited high indicators of learning and received comments from their teachers that acknowledged their hard work.
Student worth or future potential is not reflected in a rank. Students change as they grow, learn and develop. Students experience success at the College due to a broad range of factors. Some relate to the College environment, others are external. Ensuring that our students experience a love of learning throughout their life and are striving to achieve their God-given potential is most important. Knowing our students, working with their strengths to make them stronger, and identifying areas for development and the most effective strategies for improvement are essential for the joy of learning to exist for students.
When students diligently apply themselves to their studies, manage their time, keep life balanced, persevere when life and learning become difficult, and foster their love of learning, they experience success; and sometimes, such an approach to learning also results in a student achieving at the highest level within a cohort.
COVID Safe Practice Reminders
As we continue to have COVID and strains of the flu circulating in the College community, it is important that we all continue to practice good preventative measures. Please remember the following:
- Stay home when unwell and/or exhibiting cold and flu symptoms
- Wear a face mask when travelling on public transport
- Socially distance
- Continuing to ventilate classrooms and other meeting spaces wherever possible
- Regularly wash hands and sanitise shared contact surfaces
- Regularly test for COVID-19
- Report positive COVID-19 cases to the College and students who are close contacts
- Close contacts over the age of 12 are required to wear a face mask at all times at the College

Change to the Family Chapel Service for Thursday, 9 June
Change to the Family Chapel Service for Thursday, 9 June
(Dinner 5.00 pm; Chapel 6.00 pm)
We have had an overwhelming response to the Years K-4 Family Chapel to be held on Thursday, 9 June. Family Chapel is a great opportunity for us to come together as a College community and it is encouraging that so many families have put the time aside to do this. The Auditorium has always been challenging with regard to numbers and the responses for next Thursday have indicated that we will exceed capacity for this space. We considered holding the Chapel Service under the Shoulder to Shoulder Shelter, however, the weather forecast will not make this possible.
With this in mind, we have made the decision to change the focus of this Term's Family Chapel on Thursday, 9 June for students in Years K-2 meaning only students in Years K-2 will now be performing. Even with this number, we are expecting the Auditorium to be near capacity. Please note, that there is NO allocated seating for this event.
Students in Years 3 and 4 will have an opportunity to perform at the Term 3 Family Chapel Service which will be held under the Shelter. This will be exciting for these students as they will come together with our Year 12 Collegiate students as we farewell them.
Hot Dogs and a drink will still be available next Thursday evening from 5.00 pm, provided and served by the P&F free of charge in the Deakin Function Centre for students and parents.
There will be a mission fundraiser to support the WAC Kids Care Program and we encourage everyone to bring along a non-perishable food item or a gold coin for the donation which will go towards House Shield Competition. The WAC Kids Care Program provides meals for people in need in our community.
Please be mindful of the COVID Safety measures in place for the Years K-2 Family Chapel next Thursday evening (9 June):
- There will be increased ventilation in the Auditorium
- Please don't attend if you are displaying flu-like symptoms
- Social distancing will be difficult so please consider wearing a mask
- Hand sanitiser will be available at the entrance to the Auditorium

Deputy Headmaster
Foundation Day
On Friday, 10 June the College will celebrate Foundation Day. The focus of Foundation Day is to raise money which is donated to a range of Missions supported by the College.
The following is important information about the day.
- All students are to wear their College Sports Tracksuit and House Shirts to the College on Foundation Day
- Students are asked to make a $5 donation or $10 per family to support various Missions
- Money will be collected during Roll Call on Wednesday, 8 June, Thursday, 9 June, and Friday, 10 June.
- The House Group that raises the most money will be recognised as the Mission Fundraising Champion for 2022
- Please support this initiative in a generous manner
Foundation Day is also an opportunity for a further House based challenge. This comes in the form of the College Athletics Relays. This is a fantastic opportunity for the Years 3-12 students to come together and unite as one. Relays will take place in the afternoon session of the day, with the House that earns the most points from the Relays crowned the Foundation Day Activities Champion. The relays will take place at the WACA and parents are welcome to attend.

NSW Representative - Lauren O’Sullivan
Over three days this week, Lauren O’Sullivan travelled to Tamworth to compete in the NSW All Schools U/15 Girls' AFL Championships as a member of the CIS side. Playing in muddy conditions, Lauren stood out as Vice-Captain as her team went on to win the Championships. However, Lauren’s biggest highlight was being named in the NSW side to compete at the 2022 National Championships in July. This is an outstanding achievement and we wish Lauren all the best as she represents the State over the 10-day tournament.
MISA Round 5
During the windy conditions, we saw Round 5 of the MISA competition go ahead this week. Both our Soccer sides managed the conditions to secure the win in their matches. The Girls' side won 3-0 with Loren Adamson scoring twice whilst a curling corner from Jacob Smith and strong midfield play by Hayden Willebrand enabled a comfortable 4-0 win for the Years 10-12 boys. In Rugby League, our undefeated Open Boys' side faced an also undefeated John Terry Catholic College team for a top of the table clash. After a slow start in attack, our boys found their form in the second half to run away with the match with an impressive 26-12 victory. The windy conditions couldn’t stop our Ultimate Frisbee team who managed a 7-1 win whilst the Boys' Hockey side managed a 5-0 win despite playing the entire match one man down. Unfortunately, the Girls' Indoor Cricket side had a loss after some great wins in the early rounds. Our Basketball sides were glad to have indoor matches where they were able to escape the wind. The Girls' side had a tough draw whilst the Boys' side couldn’t stop the opposition in their 10 point loss.
Next week we move into Semi-Finals with several teams in contention for the Grand Final in Week 8
NASSA Athletics Carnival
We have a total of 110 students who have qualified for the NASSA Athletics Championships next week. Individual event lists have been uploaded along with the permission note to the College App. Students are reminded that they must notify Mr Goldsbrough if they cannot compete in an event or cannot attend on the day. Parents are welcome to attend but will not be permitted to sit in the stands with the students due to capacity constraints.
AICES Cross Country
We had a total of 37 students qualify for AICES Cross Country this week, which is our largest team ever. This came after an impressive six students made the podium and numerous others secured their spot with a top 10 finish. In windy and cold conditions, our students battled through the AICES course. At the end of the day, we had three students qualify through to CIS next week along with another three as part of the U/18 Girls' Teams event. We wish each of these students all the best as they head to their third Cross Country event in as many weeks.
Foundation Day
On Friday, 10 June we will be hosting our Annual Foundation Day Relay Afternoon. Secondary students will be selected to represent their House Groups following their performance in the 100m event at the College Athletics Carnival. Students will be notified early next week by email if they were successful. The two Secondary relays are a 12-14 Mixed 4 x 100m and a 15-18 Mixed 4 x 100m.
Hunter Schools' Mountain Biking Event
Race entries are now open for the Hunter Schools XCO Championships held from 9-12 June. More information can be found on the event website below. If you wish to register for the event, please contact Mr Goldsbrough before submitting your registration. Once registered please ensure you forward your registration receipt to Mr Goldsbrough so an accurate list of attending students can be determined. https://hunterschoolsmtb.com/glenrock-race-information-overview/

Dance Company News - MISA Dance Festival
Dance Company have been preparing an artistic dance work for the upcoming MISA Dance Festival. The MISA Dance Festival is an annual event where our Dance students are able to showcase their works with other Independent and Catholic schools. The students are very excited to perform again or for the first time at the Campbelltown Catholic Club, The Cube, on Tuesday, 21 June. Parents should have received a notification about this event which occurs during College hours and should respond ASAP on the College App.
Parents/carers are also welcome to attend the event to see the showcased work. More information about times or performance sessions will be released over the coming weeks.
Wollongong Bluescope Eisteddfod
Our Dance Company is planning for an upcoming competition in Wollongong known as the Bluescope Eisteddfod. The students are competing in the school division/category and I know Miss Valente and the students are working extremely hard preparing for this eisteddfod.
Parents should have already been notified via the College App regarding information for this competition, and I encourage parents to reply to this ASAP. As this is a public competition, it is a ticketed event. Miss Valente and I are encouraging parents and the wider WAC community to support these girls by purchasing a ticket.
The event is on Saturday, 2 July (the first Saturday of the upcoming Term break).
Tickets go on sale next Tuesday, 7 June, at 10.00 am via merrigong.com.au
All Tickets are $15.00 (If the dancers would like to enter the theatre after their performance, they must purchase a ticket). Tickets are General Admission - Not Allocated Seating.
Thirlmere Festival of Steam - College Cheer and College Strings
Our College Cheer and College Strings groups are performing/participating at the upcoming Thirlmere Festival of Steam. The Festival was postponed due to the poor weather conditions earlier in the year. The groups will be at the Festival on Sunday, 26 June.
The College Strings will perform on stage at 10.30 am. They are to meet Ms Bridge at the College tent at 10.00 am.
The College Cheer group will be participating in the parade. Students are to meet Miss Valente at the College Tent at 10.00 am.
Both groups will then proceed to their designated areas for their respective performances.
Parents of the students involved will receive communication via the College App regarding specific details.
WAC Crew - Expression of Interest
The WAC Crew is an integral part of the Performing Arts at the College. Students in WAC Crew support the performers on stage in various ways including setting up performance gear, running Audio/Visual equipment during the performance, troubleshooting AV issues, as well as learning about the nature of the equipment they use on the job.
Students participate in a variety of events that require the running of AV equipment including Chapel Services, Formal Assemblies, The WAC Country Fair, Presentation Evenings etc.
Students in Years 7-12 are welcome to join the WAC Crew.

Elective Music Excursion
On Thursday, 2 June, Year 10 and Year 12 Elective Music students attended the Sydney Symphony Concert at the Sydney Town Hall. Due to the refurbishment of the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Symphony returned to its original home at Town Hall, prior to the opening of the Opera House in 1973.
The students witnessed a number of exciting as well as inspiring pieces of music including:
- Ghost Light (part of 50 Fanfares - a commissioned work by Melbourne based composer Deborah Cheetham). This work was dedicated to the front line workers during the lockdowns that Australia faced
- Piano Concerto No. 1 by Prokofiev - performed by Alexander Gavrylyuk (from Ukraine)
- Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (where the famous 'In the Hall of the Mountain King' work originates) by Grieg- Symphony No. 7 ('Angel of Light') by Rautavaara
I'd like to thank Mrs Bethune for accompanying the students on the trip.
It was a thoroughly musical experience for the students.

Science and Engineering Competition
On Monday, 30 May, students from both the Year 9 and Year 10 iSTEM classes competed in the Annual Science and Engineering Competition at Mittagong RSL. The students faced eight different engineering challenges in groups of four against eight other local high schools. Whilst we placed 7th overall, our students demonstrated a willingness to try different ideas and gave it their best shot amongst some very stiff competition. Our bridge building team in particular, performed well against some of the other schools on the day.
Well done Year 9 and Year 10!

Asthma Update
What's triggering your asthma this winter?
We have already had many students through Sick Bay in the past two weeks with asthma flare-ups as the weather changes. Winter can be a difficult, tiring, and frustrating season for people with asthma. The change of weather at the beginning of the season is also a time when many people end up in the hospital due to asthma flare-ups, especially children.
Asthma Australia has released some great new resources with some ‘Asthma Basics’ for you and for your child to follow to help stop your triggers in their tracks this Winter. There is information to help you identify triggers in your life and explain them to your children.
https://asthma.org.au/winter-
Are you waiting to see a GP about your or your child’s Asthma this Winter and unsure what questions to ask? Have you seen a doctor with concerns about asthma and left feeling deflated?
Asthma Australia can help as they have Asthma Educators available to talk one-on-one. They are trained to assist you in better understanding asthma in a way that’s both helpful and easy to understand.
